For 2 weeks in late October, SIP had a guest teacher coming in from the media school in Viborg. He is a former SIP student and it was fun hearing some of his stories from his time on Skals. The point of his visit was to teach us how to use all our film and camera equipment correctly. In the first 2 days we learned how to correctly setup the camera, adjusting the focus, exposure and whitebalance. Then we moved into a more theoretical field, about the different compositions you can make with a shot. We learned about wide shots, medium shots and close-ups and when to use them. We also learned about Foley, the art of creating sound after filming. Then on Thursday it was time to film and edit our first video with multiple shots. That was to learn how to get continuity into our videos. On friday we went on a small trip to Viborg where we went to the media school. We spent the day learning about lighting and how to make light fall right on a persons face. At the end of the day we took the lights with us to the school, so we could use them for the next week.
The second week we got an overall task consisting of creating commercials for the school. It took a lot of time and effort going through the different phases of pre-production, filming and editing. The different groups came up with loads of ideas for showing off the school. Some showed off the dorms, while others biked through the school. The pre-production was a stressful phase. It was hard making storyboards and finding actors for the commercials, but somehow it all lined up on filming day, where every group found their actors and made it work. This was the day we used everything we learned in week 1, the compositions, lighting and camera settings. On editing day it was time to do foley and of course edit. It was a long process and some went out filming again, but friday morning all groups were finally finished editing and ready to show the rest of the school what they’d been doing for the last 2 weeks.
